Limits for an inverse bremsstrahlung origin of the diffuse Galactic soft gamma-ray emission

چکیده
RXTE, GINGA, and OSSE observations have revealed an intense low-energy γ-ray continuum emission from the Galactic plane, which is commonly interpreted as evidence for the possible existence of a strong flux of low-energy cosmic ray electrons. In this Paper I discuss the scenario of a hadronic origin of the soft Galactic γ-ray continuum through inverse bremsstrahlung. A flux of low-energy cosmic rays strong enough to produce the observed spectrum of γ-rays implies substantial γ-ray emission at a few MeV through nuclear de-excitation. It is shown that the existing limits on excess 3-7 MeV emission from the Galactic plane, in concert with the constraints from π0-decay γ-ray emission at higher energies, are in serious conflict with an inverse bremsstrahlung origin of the Galactic soft γ-ray emission for any physically plausible low-energy cosmic ray spectrum. While in case of energetic heavy nuclei the limits are violated by about an order of magnitude, for a large population of lowenergy protons the implied γ-ray line flux and π0-decay continuum intensity are larger than the existing limits by at least a factor of 2.

Diffuse Galactic Soft Gamma-Ray Emission
The Galactic diffuse soft gamma-ray (30-800 keV) emission has been measured from the Galactic Center by the HIREGS balloon-borne germanium spectrometer to determine the spectral characteristics and origin of the emission. The resulting Galactic diffuse continuum is found to agree well with a single power-law (plus positronium) over the entire energy range, consistent with RXTE and COMPTEL/CGRO ...
متن کاملOsse Observations of the Soft Gamma Ray Continuum from the Galactic Plane at Longitude 95
We present the results of OSSE observations of the soft gamma ray continuum emission from the Galactic plane at longitude 95 •. Emission is detected between 50 and 600 keV where the spectrum is fit well by a power law with photon index −2.6 ± 0.3 and flux (4.0 ± 0.5) × 10 −2 photons s −1 cm −2 rad −1 MeV −1 at 100 keV. This spectral shape in this range is similar to that found for the continuum...
متن کاملDiffuse Galactic hard X-ray and low-energy gamma-ray continuum
We summarize some recent results related to observations and interpretation of hard X-ray and low-energy -ray diffuse Galactic continuum emission. Combined spectra based on data from OSSE, COMPTEL and EGRET are presented. In the energy range 1-30 MeV covered by COMPTEL the spectrum of the diffuse emission has been measured and is consistent with a combination of bremsstrahlung and inverse-Compt...
متن کاملCosmic - Ray Electrons and the Diffuse Gamma - Ray Spectrum
Short Title: Cosmic-ray electrons and diffuse gamma-ray spectrum 1 Abstract The bulk of the diffuse galactic gamma-ray emission above a few tens of GeV has been conventionally ascribed to the decay of neutral pions produced in cosmic-ray interactions with interstellar matter. Cosmic-ray electrons may, however, make a significant contribution to the gamma-ray spectrum at high energies, and even ...

A recent re-determination of the non-thermal component of the hard X-ray to soft γ-ray emission from the Galactic ridge, using the SPI instrument on the INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) Observatory, is shown to be well reproduced as inverse-Compton emission from the interstellar medium. Both cosmic-ray primary electrons and secondary electrons and positrons contribute ...
